The current City Assistant can stop and start the car at traffic lights. At market launch in Germany, these functions include stopping at red lights and driving off again automatically, with further urban functions planned via over-the-air updates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 2027 update widens that list considerably. The system will be able to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Help you turn at junctions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Change lanes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Identify right-of-way situations<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Navigate roundabouts<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">BMW says that next year owners will be able to make a partially automated, BMW Maps-navigated commute from the motorway, through the countryside and into the city. This is the &#8220;address-to-address&#8221; idea: BMW describes its City Assistant as navigation-guided driver assistance built around Symbiotic Drive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_Is_BMW_Symbiotic_Drive\"><\/span>What Is BMW Symbiotic Drive?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Symbiotic Drive is BMW&#8217;s name for cooperative driving between human and machine. The driver can influence the system&#8217;s steering and braking without switching off the assistance, and the system stays active to support them. In practice, you can nudge the steering or touch the brake without the assistance dropping out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The system watches your steering behavior and gaze so it can offer timely help for the road conditions. On models with the pillar-to-pillar Panoramic iDrive display, all prompts stay visible and easy to follow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Level_2_Still_Means_You_Are_Responsible\"><\/span>Level 2 Still Means You Are Responsible<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Level 2 is partial automation. The driver must stay attentive and remain legally responsible at all times. BMW says the system does not relieve you of the duty to assess the traffic situation correctly. If you&#8217;re after self-driving where you can look away, this is not it. With DCAS approval, exemptions are no longer required, and the systems can be offered throughout Europe and in other ECE countries. That suggests the 2027 German city rollout is a first step, with wider European availability possible later. BMW has not confirmed a timeline for other markets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_Does_It_Compare_With_Mercedes\"><\/span>How Does It Compare With Mercedes?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">BMW is following Mercedes here. ArenaEV&#8217;s report says Mercedes already offers Level 4 driving in some regions, but that framing is debatable. The Mercedes system in question, MB.Drive Assist Pro, was announced as a Level 2 system, and German outlet firmenauto reports it will be orderable from the first half of 2027, with a free trial month at launch. Treat the &#8220;Level 4&#8221; label with caution until Mercedes clarifies.
