What range numbers actually mean

Range figures here come from official test cycles — EPA in the US, WLTP across Europe and much of the rest of the world — and the two aren't directly comparable, since WLTP tends to produce higher numbers than EPA for the same car.

Real-world range is usually lower than the rated figure, especially at sustained highway speeds, in cold weather, or with a full load. Treat these numbers as a way to compare models against each other, not a guarantee of what you'll see on a given trip.

Quick checklist
 • Check whether a figure is EPA or WLTP before comparing two cars directly
 • Expect highway range to run below the rated number, often by 10–20%
 • Cold weather can meaningfully cut range, especially on shorter trips before the battery warms up

Frequently asked questions

About this list.

Is this EPA range or WLTP range?
It depends on the model and market — we use whichever official cycle the manufacturer publishes for that car, usually EPA in North America and WLTP elsewhere. The two aren't directly comparable, so treat cross-market comparisons with some caution.
Why is real-world range lower than what’s listed?
Rated range comes from a standardized lab test that doesn't fully capture cold weather, highway speeds, cabin heating or cooling, or payload — all of which reduce real-world efficiency. Highway driving in particular tends to underperform the rated figure.
Does battery size alone determine range?
No — aerodynamics, weight, motor efficiency, and software all affect how far a given battery capacity can go, which is why two cars with similarly sized packs can have noticeably different range ratings.
Will this list include upcoming 2026 models?
Only once a manufacturer publishes an official range figure for that trim. Pre-launch estimates and rumored specs aren’t included until they’re confirmed.
